Eat Smart! Workplace healthy habit eating tips

You can set yourself up to be sick, or you can choose to stay well. – Wayne Dyer

The workplace can be one of the most challenging places to keep on the straight and narrow with your eating habits. Besides being tempted by vending machines that dispense a seemingly unending supply of candy bars and chips, there are the well-intended coworkers that bring in donuts, cookies, cake, and other fattening snacks that take up an extended residence on the office kitchen’s tables. However, if you plan your lunches and snacks in advance with healthy choices, you’ll be less tempted to dive for the quick fixes that are less healthy for you.

Some other workplace healthy eating habits:

Eating at your desk is fine, but don’t work or surf the internet at the same time. Research reveals that people eat 15% more calories if they eat while distracted.

Try to take a lunchtime walk for at least 10-15 minutes each day. You will burn 50-100 calories and did you know that’s enough to prevent the 5-10 lbs the average person puts on each decade and blames on their age?

Taking your time over lunch and chewing everything well will help your weight loss further. If you don’t chew correctly, your brain signals aren’t as strong and you eat more than you need.

Sept 26, 2010 World Heart Day: Workplace Wellness

One Third of Surveyed Workers Believe That Their Workplace Hinders Their Ability to Lead a Healthy Lifestyle

Despite the vast majority (91%) of workers believing that it is their employer’s responsibility to create a healthy working environment, nearly a third (32%) of employees feels their workplace actually hinders their ability to lead a healthy lifestyle, according to new independent research commissioned by the World Heart Federation and conducted by the Opinion Health Online Healthcare Consumer Survey.

World Heart Day’s Workplace Wellness initiative on September 26th, calls upon companies and individuals to use the workplace to create employee health programs and promote long-term behavioral changes that will benefit employers, employees and communities.

This year, companies are being urged one step further by engaging with companies in order for them to effectively implement the Workplace Wellness initiative.

From the Press Release on World Heart Day:

“World Heart Day is a major international awareness day dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and control of heart disease and stroke,” states Professor Pekka Puska, President, World Heart Federation. “We hope that this day motivates people to take preventative action within the workplace to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, and that people around the world will join us in both celebrating World Heart Day, and in the global fight against heart disease and stroke.”

“As many of us spend over half of our waking hours at work, the workplace is the ideal setting to encourage behaviour changes to minimize a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease.” – Dr. Kathryn Taubert, Senior Science Officer, World Heart Federation.

A healthy workforce can yield real benefits for your business, e.g. increase performance and productivity, and decrease healthcare costs, while increasing the well-being and morale of individual employees.

Treadmill Walking 101

When you have worn out your shoes, the strength of the shoe leather has passed into the fiber of your body. I measure your health by the number of shoes and hats and clothes you have worn out.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Some of you may turn to your treadmill to get your steps in. It’s important to have proper technique and safety to get the best out of your treadmill walk.

1. Begin standing with one foot on each side of the treadmill. Step on the treadmill and start at a slow rate of speed and slowly increase the speed. Be sure to know where the red emergency switch is located on most machines.

2. Do not hold onto the side rails or front console. You often see people holding on and leaning back while walking. This is incorrect posture and could be dangerous.

3. Stand up straight, head up, eyes forward, arms swinging in stride with your feet. Stride with your front heel striking close to your body while your back foot remains on the ground longer to give a powerful push-off. This back foot push off is what gives you speed and power, and will help you burn more calories.

Big Screen Treadmill Interval Walking Workout

Interval workouts alternate very fast and slower-paced walking for a great cardiovascular workout and a high calorie burn.

Start your treadmill workout during a favorite tv show or movie. Decide your walking fast pace points in the show and slow pace points in the show. For example, if you’re watching The Biggest Loser, walk at a very fast pace during each part of a challenge on a show, then slow way down during the commercials. If you’re a sports fan, go fast during breakaways on hockey and slow down when the whistle blows. Soap opera fan? Up and down with every kiss, fight or gun shot.

Total time: 47 minutes.
